Pinterest 6/20: Dump Truck Birthday Party Invitations

When it came time to plan Parker's 2nd birthday party, my sister knew that she wanted to do a theme loosely based on trucks.  Parker is obsessed with anything that has wheels.  I quickly turned to Pinterest for ideas.  We didn't go too overboard with the theme, simply because it was a party at home, with a lot of people.  How we packed close to 50 people in my sister's house, I don't know!  (Originally the party was going to be outside, but with 100+ degree temps in the forecast, my sister wisely chose to move it inside.) The only real "truck" elements were the invitations and the cake.  There were also a ton of trucks for the kids to play with at the party.

I found several truck invitations on Pinterest to use, and I decided to take elements from each of them to create Parker's invitations.

Here is what I came up with:

I purchased the clipart that was used in the 2nd pin from Baby Star Designs.  Then, I used wording similar to the 3rd pin for the inside.  It's hard to read in the picture, but it says "Truck on Over to Parker's Party for Loads of Fun!"  My favorite part of the invitation was that the truck actually dumped!  I got the idea from the 1st pin... I loved the way these turned out! Everyone said how cute they were! Once again, Pinterest came through with helping me find amazing ideas!

Friday Favorites: Teal

For as long as I can remember, I've always answered the question "What is your favorite color?" with "Purple."  After all, I am an ECU Pirate, and we bleed Purple and Gold.  But I've long been a fan of purple... I even painted my bedroom a light purple color.  Purple is the color of royalty... it is also the general color for Cancer Awareness.  But lately, I've been cheating on purple... with Teal!

Teal has become trendy.  It is being seen everywhere in fashion and home decor.  It is even becoming popular in weddings... especially peacock themed weddings. However, it is not the trendy nature of this color that makes it one of my favorites.  For me, Teal is more than a color... Teal is a cause. Teal is the color of Ovarian Cancer Awareness.  I've talked about my Grandma Ruth, and her battle with Ovarian Cancer on the blog before. Over the last few years, I have really been learning more about this horrible disease and taking on an awareness role.

If you are my Facebook friend, or you follow me on Twitter, you might have noticed some of the things that I participate in.  For example, every September, I get a Teal Pedicure as part of the Teal Toes Campaign.

Last year, I changed my profile picture on Facebook for the entire month September.

2 years ago, I made a video for It's Time to Shout.

This year, I volunteered for the Bright Night 5K for Ovarian Cancer Research in Greenville.

I have a board on Pinterest dedicated to Ovarian Cancer Organizations and products that promote awareness.  Even my blog has had a teal color scheme for a while now.

I'm not telling you all of this to make myself sound good... there is so much more that I feel like I can be doing.  This is all about awareness... and getting people talking about Ovarian Cancer.  How many of you knew that September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month?  It is often overshadowed by  October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  You see pink and pink ribbons everywhere. While both are worthy causes, it is time for us to start speaking up more about Teal... let's make Teal the new Pink!

I am in the very early planning stages of something that I hope will take off for the month of September. I will be posting more details later, once I get my thoughts organized.  I will be seeking the help of other bloggers and maybe even the media.  All that I have right now is a name for this idea... I want it to be sort of a movement.... I'm calling it:
Let's spread awareness and let Teal Take Over!  You may be wondering why I'm writing about this now, at the end of June, when I don't even have any concrete ideas, and nothing will be taking place until September... but today is June 29.... this date marks 21 years since my Grandma Ruth passed away.  Tomorrow, June 30, would have been her 86th birthday. In her memory, I want to help Teal Take Over.

So, for all of these very special reasons, Teal is my favorite this Friday!

Happy Birthday Parker!

Two years ago, today, my life, and my family's lives were forever changed... on June 28, 2010, my nephew Parker was born.  We waited all day for him to make his entrance, and finally at 6:46 pm, he made his way into the world.  "Love at first sight" has never been more true!  Aunt Crystal was smitten from the very beginning.

I am so lucky to live relatively close to my sister and her family, so I get to see Parker often... almost every day or every other day.  Watching him grow has been amazing!  Her has become a very animated 2 year old... and he is all boy! He loves playing with trucks and being outside... he loves his Mama and his Granddaddy Mike... he can be so sweet and loving... watching him laugh and getting hugs and kisses from him makes my day!

This was taken on my 27th birthday... Parker was 23 months.
I am so excited to see how Parker reacts to being a big brother in a few short weeks.  I'm sure he will love his little sister as much as everyone else will!  He is going to have some adjustment to go through because he is spoiled rotten!  (Aunt Crystal may have helped with that a tiny bit!) No matter how many nieces and nephews I might have (my sister says she's done at 2, we'll see!), Parker will always be the baby boy that made me an Aunt... a title that I am proud of an honored to have!

Last year, on his 1st birthday, I started a tradition with Parker that I'm sure I will carry on for years to come, and with his little sister.  I purchased the Dr. Seuss book, "Happy Birthday to You!" and wrote him a letter in the front.  I told him in the letter that every year on his birthday, we would get together and I would read him the book.  I didn't get a chance to read it to him today, but I will definitely make time to do it Saturday, before or after his birthday party!

Dear Parker... Aunt Crystal hopes that you've had a wonderful 2nd Birthday!  I love you more than words can say!  Can't wait to celebrate with you on Saturday!

Friday Favorites: Timeless Wallet from Thirty One Gifts

I (kinda) recently got a new wallet from Thirty-One and I love it!  I decided to make a video about it so that you can really see its awesomeness, and because I like to shake things up!

Don't you just love it?! I forgot to mention that it also comes in other patterns and colors.  If you'd like to get one for yourself, or any of the other great products from Thirty One, check out my sister's website!

Disclaimer: I purchased this wallet, and was in no way compensated for this review. These are my own opinions.

Music Monday: Glass by Thompson Square

I really didn't know what song to feature in my next Music Monday post... I've really been stuck on Postcard from Paris for a long time now... and I don't see that changing anytime soon. But... I heard "Glass" by Thompson Square for the first time on Saturday, and something about the song immediately struck me... maybe its the rhythm or the great harmony... I don't know... but I liked it.

Since then, I've heard it a few more times and its just beautiful to me.  Then, in the wee hours of the morning, I was up doing homework and saw the video on CMT... and the video is equally as beautiful.  By the way, Keifer and Shawna, which make up Thompson Square, are husband and wife... I think that adds to the beauty of this video.

What song has been stuck in your head lately?

Friday Favorites: Afternoon Naps

My current schedule has allowed me to take advantage of something that I haven't enjoyed since my days of living in the dorms at school... afternoon naps.  Every day I'm done with school by 11am, so my afternoons are free... Usually, I stay up way too late, and have to get up in time to get ready to walk out of the door no later than 8:30am.  Since I'm not getting 8 hours at night, I have started taking afternoon naps.

Now, these naps usually squash my productivity... I could be using the extra sleeping time to clean and organize my house or to tackle the huge amounts of projects that I have undone, but once I hit the couch, it sucks me in!  The other problem with these naps is that when I sleep during the day, I stay up later at night.  I'm not one of those people that take 30 minute power naps... they are at least a couple hours!

Even with all of the disadvantages, I'm totally loving my afternoon naps.  They aren't every day, but I definitely love when I can get one in!

Do you nap?  Are you a power napper or do you like to enjoy the long ones like I do?

Music Monday: Postcard from Paris by The Band Perry

From the very first time that I heard this song, I was in love! The one line that stuck out to me was "It's the never knowing that keeps this going and drives me crazy." That one lyric perfectly describes a situation that I've been holding on to for the last 5 years...

The more and more that I listened to this song, everything made sense.  I'm starting to wonder if I will ever be satisfied with anything other than the "real thing."  I'm always comparing the things I find to what I feel like I'm missing... and every time that I think things are ok, something reappears to make me question things again.

I've been belting out this song for weeks! I'm loving everything I hear from The Band Perry lately.

27 Before 27 Update

So, I'm 27 now... and have been for about 5 days.  So, I guess its time to give you a little update on my 27 Before 27 List.  There were a lot of things not completed, so I'm making the executive decision to continue this list and complete it by November 28, when I will be 27 1/2.  (Hey, its my list, I can do what I want!)

27 Things To Do Before I Turn 27

  1. Get a handle on the paper clutter in my house. Started.  I have shredded about 2 bins full of old bills and documents.  There is a lot to go, and to get everything organized.
  2. Make all As and Bs in my classes for the Spring 2012 semester. Didn't happen... it was a crazy semester... So, I'm changing this one to Fall 2012 semester (This semester will end after November 28, but I should have a good idea of what my grades are by then.)
  3. Make at least $500 profit from selling Tupperware. Right now, I'm at about $300. I think I'm going to up this number, but I don't have a goal yet.)
  4. Actually make or do 10 things that I have pinned on Pinterest. I'm sure that I've done 10 Pinterest inspired things, but I haven't kept up with all of them.  I'm changing this to 20 and will keep better track! Here are the 5 that I know I've done...so I've got 10 more to do/document!
    1. Felt Flower Wreath
    2. Cupcake Stands
    3. Basket Weave Cake Decorating
    4. Bear Hugs Valentines
    5. Rose Balls
  5. Go through my closet and throw away/donate/sell things that I no longer need or wear. Started.  I've gone through my closet and weeded out some things.  I'm having a yard sale (today) with my sister.  This goal will also include organizing my closet to be more functional.
  6. Set up Home Office/Craft Room. Started... a lot left to do...
  7. Read 10 books. I've read 8 so far.  This one will change to 20 books by November 28. Here are the ones I've read.  I still need to write blog posts about a lot of them, so they are not linked yet.
    1. Belle Weather: Mostly Sunny with a Chance of Scattered Hissy Fits and Conniptions
    2. More
    3. Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun (Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery #1)
    4. Always the Wedding Planner, Never the Bride
    5. The Single Woman's Sassy Survival Guide: Letting Go and Moving On
    6. Leftovers: A Novel
    7. Always the Designer, Never the Bride
    8. The Help
  8. Try 10 new recipes. I'm at 5, I think.  This one will be upped to 15.
    1. Snickerdoodle Cake
    2. Pepperoni Roll Ups
    3. Southern Biscuits
    4. Banoffee Danger Pie
    5. Crock Pot Pineapple BBQ Chicken (I need to write the blog post on this one)
  9. Watch the entire Sex and the City series in order.  (Including both movies.) No progress.
  10. Take a winery tour. DONE!
  11. Put money into savings every paycheck. This one started out really well, and then I needed to use the money in my savings, so it was all gone.  Once I start getting regular paychecks again, I will start this again.
  12. Throw my Daddy a 50th Birthday Party. DONE!
  13. Lose (at least) 20 pounds. I got to 12.  I was doing really well, and then stopped what I was doing when the semester got crazy.  I'm changing this to 40 pounds, since I'm starting back next week!
  14. Quit smoking… for real this time. Uh no... but I will have to do this before November...
  15. Go on a first date. I thought this was going to happen, but no... there was a guy, but he didn't really follow through.  I'm keeping this one since I'm trying to remain hopeful!
  16. Wear a dress everyday for a week. Nope... I got some really cute dresses recently, so I think this will happen soon.
  17. Finish my Alphabet Blog Series. Nope... I will finish this though... I have tons of ideas rolling around. I may even start it over, since its been so long.
  18. Turn in a school assignment a whole day before it is due. DONE! Actually more than one, I'm still keeping this one on this list as motivation not to procrastinate next semester.
  19. Blog at least twice a week, every week. This one started out really well until school got really crazy.  The overall goal behind this one was to blog more.  So, I'm changing this one a little bit. There might be weeks when I can't blog 2 times, and there may be weeks when I blog 5 times a week... So, the new goal will be to have more blog posts this year than ever before.  The best year was 2008, and I had 83 posts.  Including this post, I'm at 39 for 2012, so I'm halfway there.
  20. Have a picnic. No
  21. Have people over for dinner. No
  22. Go a week without Twitter or Facebook. No... this is going to be a lot harder than I imagined, but I'm keeping it.  I have cut back a lot on both websites, but once school gets back into full swing, I'm sure I will go a week.
  23. Drink 70 gallons of water.  (8 cups of water per day for 140 days) I started out really strong with this one, but ended up stopping halfway through.  I just got out of the habit.  I haven't added up how many gallons I did drink, but once I do, I will revise this goal.
  24. Send 5 people Birthday cards through the mail. I sent 2 Birthday cards and a graduation card.  I'm revising this one to send 10 cards (any kind) through the mail.
  25. Cook dinner for my whole family, including dessert. DONE!  I never blogged about this one, but it was in February for my Mom and my Aunt's birthdays.  I cooked hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, garden peas, biscuits and this cake.
  26. Finish the photo album for my parents’ 25th Wedding Anniversary party.  (It was almost 5 years ago!) Nope... by 27 1/2, it will have been 5 years! (Queen of Procrastination?)
  27. Blog about my progress on this list.  I did ok with this... there are a few things that I missed.  I will make those up and continue to write about the other things I complete.
So, I didn't finish hardly any of them completely... but I did make a lot of progress.  I will be adding things to replace the ones that are actually finished... and post an updated list soon.  Be on the lookout for the 27 before 27.5 soon!

Friday Favorites: Chevron

In case you haven't noticed, (come out of your google reader, people) I gave the blog a little face lift recently.  Really the only thing that changed was the header and my signature at the end of the post.  While I like the trees, I wasn't in love with them, and they didn't have any specific meaning or anything.

I decided to go with a chevron print.  Usually, I'm not one to jump on the trendy bandwagon, but I'm loving this print lately.  Chevron is hot lately... its turning up everywhere.  Just do a general search on pinterest and you will find chevron everything... from pillows and furniture, to cakes and clothes.  Chevron is modern and chic... its simple and stylish.

I like the clean lines, but that its not simply stripes.  The blog header was my first venture into using chevron, but I'm hoping to find the perfect dress soon, and use it in some craft projects.  I definitely see more chevron in my future, since it is now one of my favorite things!
